Tax law attorney Stephen L. Hopkins presented “Eduardo Saverin and Section 877A Expatriation Tax” on September 19, 2013 at a Minnesota State Bar Association section education meeting.  The presentation gave an overview of Section 877A, which deems all property of a covered expatriate is sold for its fair market value on the day before the expatriation date, and how Eduardo Saverin, Facebook co-founder, mitigated his U.S. income tax exposure when renouncing his citizenship in 2012.  The presentation also briefly covered Canadian income taxes and the Canada-US Tax Treaty.
